Baccalieu Trail Restored traditional Newfoundland fishing house - watch for whales or icebergs while drinking coffee in bed. Wake to the sound of waves, watch seabirds diving into Conception bay while you drink coffee in bed - perhaps even spot a few whales or an iceberg just off the point. Sleeps 6 - 2 double bedrooms, 1 double sofa bed
Whether its coffee in bed or a brew at the kitchen table this is your view. Watch the waves, seabirds diving, or whales and icebergs in season.
Colours of Nature
Wild flowers in abundance.
Seabirds Nesting
The craggy cliffs along the coast are prime nesting areas for hundreds of seabirds. Be sure to bring your camera and perhaps your binoculars.
Conception Bay
Communities along Conception Bay have a vibrance of colour yet a stillness that helps to make your holiday truly a relaxing escape from the real world.
The Mouse Hole
Just a few km up the coast visit the mouse hole where the force of the waves has carved a passage in the rock.
Blackhead - c.1930
The Blackhead cove at a time when fishing was the main occupation. This photo shows the first Methodist church in Canada. This area is a favorite for those seeking geneology info.
Built in 1917 The Cox House has the traditional flavour of outport Newfoundland. Wide plank ceiling and floor boards in both bedrooms, a cast iron bed, and most importantly a proximity to the ocean which allows you to fall asleep to nothing but the sound of waves and seabirds calling.
Hike the many ocean or woodland trails at your doorstep or venture farther along the Baccalieu trail. Just 9km towards Old Perlican you will find Northern Bay Sands - a broad sandy beach with a river pool to swim in if you find the ocean a bit too - shall we say "fresh". Pack a picnic and enjoy the day or visit Hogan's Take-out for a Newfoundland favorite - "fish, chips, dressing and gravy".

Further Details
The Baccalieu Trail refers to the towns on the Bay de Verde Peninsula which follow the coast on the north western shore of Conception Bay and the north eastern shore of Trinity Bay.
Baccalieu is a significant name for the region for a number of reasons. “Baccalieu” is derived either from the Spanish bacalao or the Basque baccalos, both terms meaning “codfish” or “dried codfish.” As early as 500 years ago, migratory fishermen from many countries including Portugal, Spain, and the Banques country, which is now part of France and Spain, crossed the ocean to fish in the rich fishing grounds off the Bay de Verde Peninsula.
We can see evidence of Portugese fishermen in the community name Bay de Verde which is Portugese for "Green Bay." The presence of French fishermen is seen in the names Port de Grave, Harbour Grace (possibly Harve de Grace), Bay Roberts (first named Baie de Robert). The name “Baccalieu" pays tribute to these fishermen whose adventures and contributions to the European settlement of North America have not been recorded; yet, whose voyages helped to bring about settlement.
The name Baccalieu Trail points to the role the area has always played and still plays in the provincial fishery. Today, the Baccalieu region is responsible for approximately 22% of the value of the provincial fishery.
In addition, the name Baccalieu Trail reflects the Baccalieu Island Ecological Reserve, which has the greatest abundance and species diversity of seabirds in eastern North America.
The region is comprised of almost 60 small towns, which retain their peaceful community centered lifestyle.
At the tip of the Baccalieu trail is Baccalieu Island.
Baccalieu Island is the largest protected seabird island in Newfoundland and Labrador. During the summer, it has more types of breeding seabirds than any other seabird colony in the province, and its 3,360,000-plus pairs of Leach's storm petrels make it the largest Leach's storm petrel colony in the world. In addition to the millions of petrels, the Baccalieu Island Ecological Reserve is the second-largest puffin colony (after the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve) in North America. More than 75,000 pairs nest on Baccalieu's grassy slopes and surrounding rock scree. Black-legged kittiwakes, common and thick-billed murres, razorbills, and Northern fulmars are also present.
